Jovana White appreciates Mr. Maheu, a teacher at MIRA MESA HIGH in San Diego, CA

Mr. Maheu is a teacher with a big heart (If you have had his class or know him personally that statement will give you a chuckle). He works passionately to teach students the history of our nation. He does not sugar coat anything nor does he disregard important aspects of history that many school systems refuses to teach. He treats all students fairly and pushes us to strive for success. On A.P test day, Mr.Maheu provides us with smarties as a token for taking the time and liberty to study and

Mike Barnard appreciates Mr. Jim Lund, a teacher at CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL in Chaska, MN

Jim Lund was the physics teacher and theater director at Chaska High School while I was a student there. We was a great educator who helped students grow and make discoveries, both artistic and scientific. As a person, I admired his intelligence and his wit. I admired his problem-solving skills. I admired how observant he was and how he listened to people. He pushes people to perform to their potential and at the height of their intelligence.

Natalie Barnard appreciates Mr. Andy Powell, a teacher at CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL in Chaska, MN

The most influential teacher in my life was my high school teacher, Mr. Andy Powell. Before every class, he would spend the first 10-minutes discussing current events. With a warm smile and a light in his eye, Mr. Powell would enthusiastically ask us to share a story that we had read in the newspaper. It was a brilliant way to get us reading, get us talking, and ultimately get us thinking critically. He let us have a voice, gave space for opinions without being wrong or right. He engaged us with

Joy Pelton appreciates Prof. Leon Litwack, a teacher at UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY in Berkeley, CA

Professor Leon Litwack has received many personal and professional accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for his history of American slavery's aftermath, "Been in the Storm So Long." My voice of appreciation for him as my teacher joins the resounding chorus. Litwack insisted on teaching introductory history courses for freshmen at Berkeley for over 40 years, a “chore” usually foisted on the most junior members of the faculty. In the late 60s, I was lucky to be one of the 500 students in

Rich Yumul appreciates Mrs. Benedetta Dalbesio, a teacher at SINALOA MIDDLE in Novato, CA

I simply have really fond memories of being in her Jazz Band in 7th and 8th grade. It was a lot of fun and she made waking up early and braving morning traffic with my saxophone strapped to the back of my bike worth it. Now that I have kids of my own, I have new appreciation of her ability to motivate and teach music to a bunch of 12 and 13 year olds at 7:30 min the morning. That is straight up magical. Thank you Ms. Dalbesio for being a great teacher!

Ken Futernick appreciates Ms. Crenshaw, a teacher at HILLVIEW MIDDLE in Menlo Park, CA

By the time I reached 3rd grade, most of my classmates were enthusiastic readers. I wasn't. I was beginning to dread school, but my teacher, Ms. Crenshaw, took the pressure off and seemed to understand what I needed. She game me a sack full of comic books to take home - Archie, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Dennis the Menace -- and soon I was reading books and looking forward to school.

Ms. Crenshaw also supported my family during a challenging time when my older sister was suffering from a
