Teacher Stories and Above & Beyond Teaching have joined forces to elevate the voices of extraordinary educators and illuminate the lasting impact great teaching has on students, schools, and communities.
STATISTICS TELL US WHAT IS HAPPENING
Stories Tell Us Why It Matters
In 1980, nearly 25,000 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in the United States. The statistics were widely known, but one story helped turn public awareness into action.
That year, 13-year-old Cari Lightner was struck and killed by a repeat drunk driver while walking to a church carnival near Sacramento. Her mother, Candy Lightner, transformed her grief into action and founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
Americans already knew drunk driving was deadly. Cari’s story gave the crisis a face, a family, and a sense of urgency. Awareness grew, laws changed, and alcohol-related traffic deaths declined substantially.
Today, we know the statistics surrounding teacher shortages, attrition, burnout, and declining morale. But facts alone cannot show us what great teachers make possible. For that, we need stories.
Through our partnership, Teacher Stories and Above and Beyond Teaching are finding and amplifying the stories of accomplished educators. These stories help future teachers see what is possible, remind current teachers why their work matters, and show the public and policymakers what teachers need to thrive.
If we want people to value great teaching and create the conditions for it to flourish, we must help them see what great teachers make possible.
A Fresh Lens on Teacher Impact
LAUNCHING OUR PARTNERSHIP
We launched the partnership through events in Sacramento and Los Angeles, bringing together accomplished teachers, students, teacher educators, education leaders, policymakers, and advocates.
The events centered on a question that is rarely asked directly:
What makes a teacher’s influence powerful enough to change the course of a student’s life?
Participants heard from Above & Beyond Teaching honorees, reflected on the educators who had shaped their own lives, and considered how teacher stories could strengthen recruitment, preparation, mentoring, professional learning, retention, and public advocacy.
They were also invited to complete a deeply personal sentence:
“I would not be the person I am today were it not for…”
The stories came quickly and in remarkable detail. Participants remembered what their teachers said, how they made them feel, and the moments when those teachers changed what they believed about themselves.
That response reinforced one of the partnership’s central ideas: a teacher’s most enduring influence may not be fully visible while a student is sitting in the classroom. Sometimes its significance becomes clear only years later.
What We Heard From Two Leading Voices in California Education
Dr Linda Darling-Hammond
At the Sacramento event, Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond reminded us that stories about extraordinary teachers must also include the conditions that make extraordinary teaching possible.
Care and commitment matter, but teachers cannot be expected to succeed through personal sacrifice alone. They need affordable, high-quality preparation, strong mentoring, time to collaborate, ongoing professional learning, effective school leadership, and working conditions that allow them to remain in the profession.
Her message was clear: we should celebrate exceptional teachers without turning them into rare heroes. The goal is to build systems that make great teaching possible, sustainable, and widespread.
Dr Pedro Noguera
At the Los Angeles event, Dr. Pedro Noguera challenged us to judge teaching by its impact on students, especially those who need the most help.
He described teaching as complex work that combines content knowledge, emotional intelligence, relationships, creativity, and thousands of real-time decisions. He also emphasized that students often know which teachers help them learn, which teachers believe in them, and where meaningful connection happens.
His challenge was to identify what effective teachers do, learn from them, and create structures that allow their knowledge to strengthen the profession. Teacher voice must be central to that work.
