From Outsider to Educator: The Teacher Who Changed Nikki’s Life
Episode Notes
What happens when one teacher helps a student see that education—and a different future—truly belong to her?
In this moving Teacher Stories episode, Nikki Ahrenstorff honors Gary Childs II, the high school English teacher who changed the direction of her life.
Nikki grew up amid poverty, housing instability, violence, and hunger. With little academic support at home, she struggled in school and came to believe she was “stupid” and did not matter. Although she eventually learned to read in third grade, she continued to feel far behind her classmates—an outsider looking into a world of learning that seemed reserved for other people.
Everything began to change when Nikki entered Mr. Childs’ English classroom. He created a place where students were welcomed into every conversation and where their ideas, experiences, and voices were genuinely valued. He listened—really listened—and helped Nikki connect great works of literature to her own life. When he introduced The Odyssey, he told his students, “This is your odyssey. This is your journey.”
For Nikki, those words opened a door. Through reading, writing, and classroom discussion, she discovered that her experiences mattered and that she had a place at the academic table. Mr. Childs encouraged her to be creative, take risks, and imagine a future beyond the circumstances into which she had been born.
That sense of belonging ultimately inspired Nikki to become a high school English teacher herself. She paid her own way through community college and a local California State University, returned to student-teach with Mr. Childs, and was eventually hired to teach in the classroom next to his.
Following Nikki’s deeply personal tribute, Mr. Childs reflects on the example set by his own father, a teacher who created a classroom where students could be themselves, feel comfortable, and excel. He also offers a heartfelt acknowledgment of the students who shaped his life and made his recognition possible.
Presented through Teacher Stories’ partnership with Above and Beyond Teaching, this episode is a powerful reminder that a teacher’s greatest influence may begin with something deceptively simple: welcoming a student, listening closely, and helping that young person believe, “I can.”
