A Voice, a Calling, and the Teacher Who Saw Both

In this moving Teacher Stories video, accomplished opera singer Efrain Solis honors Jeanette McMahon, the choir teacher who recognized his gifts when he was just 11 years old and remained an extraordinary influence throughout middle and high school. Growing up in a conservative home where he was not permitted to listen to secular music, Efrain discovered a new world in Jeanette’s choir room. She created a safe and welcoming space, encouraged his musical curiosity, gave him free voice lessons, and drove him to school each morning so he could attend an early theater class. She also supported him during one of the most personal and consequential periods of his young life, giving him permission to accept who he was. Efrain recalls a rehearsal for Bye Bye Birdie when Jeanette challenged him to stop trying so hard, become more honest, and “dig deeper.” With one carefully chosen word, she helped him draw upon his authentic feelings—and communicate them through his performance. It was a breakthrough not only for a young actor, but for a young person learning to live truthfully. Efrain credits Jeanette with helping him become the singer and person he is today. In her response, Jeanette reflects on teaching as a way of paying forward the gifts her own educators gave her.
